Following a complete defeat by South Africa in the recently finished two-match Test series, the vice-captain of India expressed regret to the supporters for the poor performances of the team, stating that they will ‘come together, focus, and reset.’ Pant took over as captain in the second Test held in Guwahati after the usual captain Shubman Gill was unable to play due to a neck injury. “We can’t ignore that we didn’t play well enough in the past two weeks. As a team and as individuals, we always aim to perform at the best level possible and bring happiness to millions of Indians,” Pant shared on X on Thursday. “I apologize for not meeting expectations this time, but sports teach you to learn, adapt, and improve – both as a team and as individuals… We know our team’s potential, and we are determined to work hard, come together, focus, and reset to return stronger and better as a team and as individuals,” he continued.

After the loss in the Kolkata Test a couple of weeks ago, India faced a heavy defeat against the Proteas in the second Test, losing by an enormous 408 runs. This most recent Test resulted in a 0-2 defeat for India, marking another clean sweep after losing 3-0 to New Zealand last year. The loss sparked significant criticism and discussions about the team's performance and leadership, with fans expressing their discontent towards coach Gautam Gambhir. On Wednesday, Gill also commented, “Smooth waters don’t teach you how to navigate; it’s the storms that create steady hands. We will keep believing in each other, support each other, and advance – growing stronger.” Gill had retired hurt on four runs after experiencing neck spasms during India’s first innings of the Eden Test. He was later hospitalized and ruled out for the remainder of the match. Gill had traveled to Guwahati but was released just before the Test.
