The University of California (UC) has joined a coalition. This coalition is directed by Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft. The coalition will invest in the research and development of the clean energy technology. This clean energy technology will in turn be used to fight climate change.

Ten countries’ members are a part of the coalition, including India, China and United States, while UC is the only institutional investor to join 27 private sector members of Gates' Energy Coalition.

A statement from the University says, that it would extend help so that the coalition would be able to explore the best ways to participate in early-stage investments.

According to the University, it would invest along with the other participating members of the coalition. Earlier, the University already assured $1 billion investment in the clean energy innovation for the coming five years. Besides this, it has also sanctioned more $250 million for funding the beginning stage ideas sprouting from the ecosystem of the University.

The Microsoft co-founder said, “We’re unbiased, but it has to be clean and it has to have a chance of scaling up at a cost lower than today’s hydrocarbon-based energy sources.”

Janet Napolitano, UC President, said, “The University of California, with its 10 campuses and three national energy labs, is home to some of the best climate scientists in the world and as a public research institution we take the imperative to solve global climate change very seriously.”
