A 12-inch (30-cm) gas pipeline, accidentally ruptured by construction crew has unleashed an explosion. 15 people were injured in this industrial accident of which four are stated to be in critical condition. The explosion occurred at Pacific Gas & Electric Corp, near state Highway 99.
Fresno Fire Department spokesman, Peter Martinez said, the highway in both direction and an adjacent railroad line has been closed due to the accident. Adding further, Martinez said one worker in critical condition was flown to hospital by helicopter.
The mishap took place at about 2:30 p.m.
Six of the injured are being treated at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, while two more are in the burn unit, said hospital spokeswoman Mary Lisa Russell.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Department told a newspaper, the accident occurred at a shooting range used by law enforcement.
Fresno is located 190 miles (300km) southeast of San Francisco.
An investigation team by the California Public Utilities has been sent to Fresno for investigation, said Spokeswoman Terrie Prosper.
"The CPUC will conduct a full investigation of the explosion and has already coordinated with the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration," Prosper said.
