Mumps Outbreak In Los Angeles

Mumps outbreak is suffocating Los Angeles, over 40 people in Los Angeles County and surrounding areas have been infected with mumps, according to the Los Angeles Department of Public Health.

"The majority of these cases are among MSM but some are women and heterosexual men with social connections to MSM cases," the department said, using an acronym to describe men who have sex with men.

Mumps is "highly infectious" and is also transmitted through saliva, as per the department; behaviors which involve the exchange of saliva, like kissing or sharing of utensils, cups, lipsticks or cigarettes can increase the risk of the virus.

Symptoms of Mumps can include a few day of fever and also fatigue, deafness and salivary gland swelling and also pain, said the department. The complications can include orchitis, which is the inflammation of the testicles.

Most cases of the transmission have occurred at the large venues, like athletic clubs, bars, theaters and nightclubs, said the department. Most of the people infected have not been fully vaccinated, though some were fully vaccinated, as per the department.

The department recommends that the people to get completely vaccinated. People who might be infected to virus should wear a mask and also stay between 3 to 6 feet from other patients, said the department. They should also stay at home and also avoid public spaces at least for five days after their salivary glands begin to swell or until the other symptoms clear.
