Progress started Against Wildfire North of L.A

Firefighters have made a lot of progress in fighting wildfire that has been spreading outside Los Angeles since Friday. But another blaze continued to grow in farther north.

The so-called Sand fire in the Angeles National Forest remained massive. Their efforts had been helped by diminished winds, which reduced the fire's growth.

According to the authorities, most of the people who ran out of their homes, had been allowed to return, although some roads were closed.

Minimum one person had been reported dead and nearly 18 homes have been destroyed in the fire.

California firefighters continued to battle another large fire near Big Sur, which grew on Thursday. Around 2,000 structures were threatened by the blaze.

Thirty four homes and 10 other buildings had been destroyed since the fire broke out at around 8:45 AM on July 22.

A CalFire spokesman said that one contract bulldozer operator fighting the blaze died after the vehicle rolled over on Tuesday night. The operator had been identified by the department on Thursday as Robert Oliver Reagen III of Friant, California.

CalFire, said in a statement, "Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with Robert's family, friends and firefighting community as they navigate through this difficult time.”

California's acting governor, Tom Torlakson, has declared  the states of emergency for the areas affected by the Sand and Soberanes fires. California is in its fifth year of a historic drought, that increased the risk of wildfires.
