According to figures released on Wednesday by the U.S Bureau of Economic Analysis, California has been ranked at seventh position in the world’s economic growth. In 2014, the state’s domestic product had reached $2.3 trillion as per a report.

After the 2008 financial crisis, the state had been ranked at No.10. But 2014 saw statewide economic growth in various sectors particularly in professional and technical services. There was also a boost in agricultural sector despite an ongoing drought.

“People see us as Silicon Valley, where computers are made, and Los Angeles, where movies are made, but we’re doing a lot more than that,” said Robert Kleinhenz, chief economist at the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp.

“The appreciation of the dollar will just by itself improve the ranking of the state of California,” he said.

California had slipped very low in terms of rank in 2002 since it claimed No.6 position.

Stating this as positive development, Governor Jerry Brown’s spokesman wrote in a mail “California certainly has its share of challenges, but these figures reaffirm the strength and diversity of our economy, we aren’t competing with Texas or Florida, we’re challenging world economies like Brazil and Germany.”

With such an achievement, California economists are planning to spend more money on health care, welfare, child care and higher education
