The 57th Grammy awards ,with 74 honors was given out at the newly christened Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony, the Sunday afternoon event at the Nokia Theatre L.A. ,in Downtown Los Angeles.
Sam Smith had a huge night at the Grammy Awards, picking up four awards, three of them in major categories: best new artist, song of the year and record of the year for his smash hit “Stay With Me.” ,while Beyonce Knowles had to satisfy herself with three awards, one each in best R & B Album category, best surround sound album and best music film. She also closed out the show with “Take My Hand Precious Lord” (introducing John Legend and Common’s “Glory”) as a group of background performers held up their hands in a “hands up, don’t shoot” image.
Performance in the afternoon also included, a stirring depiction of “Tonight” from “West Side Story” by Alexandra Silber and Cheyenne Jackson. Ana Tijoux, Chilean hip-hop artist, gave a lively performance in Spanish and folkies Old Crow Medicine Show combined with play and dancing to wake things up at the end.
Beck surprised everyone with an album of the year win for “Morning Phase.”
“Beck is one of the great purveyors of pure love of music. Beck approaches music with respect that allows him to be self deprecating.” said Dwight David Yoakam, an American singer-songwriter.
