The Human Rights Center at the UC Berkeley School of Law has been awarded a $1-million grant by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. It was one among the nine organizations to receive awards of $500,000 to $ 1-million under the Chicago-based foundation’s annual prizes for Creative and Effective Institutions.
The Human Rights Center at the UC Berkeley School of Law researches on war crimes and other human right violations all around the world, providing assistance to the victims. As per the officials, The Law School had sent researchers to Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East to cumulate the evidence of barbarity so that proper counsel is given to the casualty. These researches are conducted to trace the problem and improve it.
The centre’s research and work has been has been used by the International Criminal Court and the tribunals seeking to prosecute war criminals in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia and by United Nations’ programs to aid refugees.
The 20-year-old centre with 8 to 10 staff members gets an yearly donation of about $1.8 million.
The new endowment will “provide a sense of stability and that makes this really important,” said Alexa Koenig, the center’s executive director.
