A seasoned journalist has reported that Apple intends to incorporate cameras into its smartwatches. The tech giant based in Cupertino might position a camera near the crown and the button on the side of the Apple Watch Ultra, enabling users to scan nearby objects for information. There are also indications that the regular Apple Watch series will receive similar enhancements. This development aligns with Apple’s goal of creating a smartwatch that embodies artificial intelligence, capable of observing the external environment and providing pertinent information. This information originates from Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. In his recent Power On newsletter, Gurman discussed Apple’s intentions concerning its smartwatch range, including both the Watch Ultra and the standard series. In pursuit of integrating AI into the iPhone, the company is reportedly aiming to embed Visual Intelligence into its smartwatches. This feature is a visual lookup tool designed to help users quickly learn about objects and locations, utilizing Apple Intelligence, the AI system developed by the iPhone manufacturer.

As part of this strategy, the regular Apple Watch is expected to feature cameras embedded within the display, akin to the front camera on the iPhone. The camera on the Apple Watch Ultra is believed to be situated between its crown and side button. Gurman notes that the Watch Ultra is thicker than the standard models, which could provide Apple with additional space for this technology. Users might be able to aim their Apple Watch Ultra at an object to scan it, while those with the standard series may need to turn their wrist to achieve the same function. Though details about its features are not yet disclosed, it is suggested that the smartwatch will likely not facilitate FaceTime due to various complications.

Firstly, the screen of the smartwatch is deemed too small for effective video calls. Additionally, holding up the watch throughout a call would be impractical. Gurman mentions that adapting the FaceTime app for Apple Watch would not be overly difficult; however, despite this, it remains a “far-fetched idea.”
