
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has included three new governors to its 51-member board and appointed six minority members to other leadership positions. The move has taken in its latest response to the OscarsSoWhite diversity crisis. The film academy also begs apology to Asians for a racially insensitive skit during the last month's Oscar show.
Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the president of academy announced the new appointees after a meeting of the organization's Board of Governors on late Tuesday. Boone Isaacs said that, "I can understand the feelings and we are setting up a meeting to discuss, because as you well know, no one sets out to be offensive, and I'm very sorry that has happened."
"I think so much is achieved with dialogue, so much is achieved. And that is what we'll continue to do: have dialogue, listen and just keep fixing."
Boone Isaacs said in a statement that, she is proud of those efforts. "However, we know there is more to do as we move forward to make this a more inclusive organization," she added.
Actor Gael Garcia Bernal, producer Effie Brown and cinematographer Amy Vincent are included in the new appointees, while the new governors are director Jennifer Yuh Nelson ("Kung-Fu Panda"), writer Gregory Nava ("Frida"), and Reginald Hudlin, who produced the most recent Academy Awards.
